PHP is the language that applications such as WordPress run on. A newer PHP version usually makes your site faster and more secure. Here is how to change it in Plesk.

Before you change the version

  • Check which versions your application, theme and plugins support.
  • Take a backup.
  • In WordPress, update WordPress, themes and plugins first.

Steps

  1. Log in to Plesk.
  2. In Websites & Domains, choose PHP Settings (or PHP) next to your domain.
  3. In the PHP version field, pick the version you want from those listed.
  4. Click OK or Apply to save.
  5. Open your website and check that everything works correctly.

Other useful settings

On the same page you can change settings such as:

  • memory_limit: memory available to PHP for each run.
  • upload_max_filesize and post_max_size: the maximum size of files you upload.
  • max_execution_time: how long a task may run.

Something broke?

If the site shows an error or a blank page after the change, switch back to the previous version from the same screen. Usually a plugin or theme does not yet support the new version.
