Making Great Content with Keywords

Keywords have always been key to SEO, but correct implementation of keywords on your website has changed quite a bit over the years. It's no longer a simple act of stuffing keywords into every element of your page. Google is getting better and better about understanding context around keyword and related topics, so it's more important now to write high-quality content first and apply keywords second. We call this "keyword drafting" (read more about it here). Basically, focus on great content, then use keyword research to tweak what you've written to address high-value keywords that people are using in search engines for the topics related to your content.

Google doesn't need to see the exact keyword you've written mentioned a certain number of times anymore. Google can look at the surrounding topical relevance of content to understand what you're covering. To be clear, you still need to use keywords, but it's more important to produce really, unique and valuable content.

Keyword settings in Weebly provide a lot of value, the most important inputs include custom page and blog URLs, Title Tags and Meta Descriptions, along with the ability to use text elements on the page to create high quality content throughout the body of your pages.

The best skill you can develop is the ability to find keywords that are performing well, or have a lot of business potential, and then driving traffic with optimization.

Keyword Mapping

Another strategy for keywords and content is called keyword mapping. This involves taking the keywords you want to target and connecting it with the content you’ve already written on your site. Map them together to see what you can optimize, what new things you need to write and build, and what opportunities there are. Look at all your pages and the keywords you’ve built and see where there is opportunity to improve the page, with content, or CTR, or find content that has no keywords, or keywords with no content, find link building opportunities so you can push through harder.

Here's an example of keyword mapping chart.

How to Make Great Content

Relevancy, quality and overall experience. Great content is always relevant to the keyword target, which you do above by applying keyword research to your content.

Quality: Needs to provide information that people are looking for, that people want. And information that is unique to your website. New, exciting interesting for your query and for your market.

Experience: How someone interacts with your content. Is it easy to read, is it well organized and does it communicate effectively? Is it well designed? Everything you do with all the tags and elements outlined in Getting Started are the key creating a good content experience. That’s why they are ranking signals, because they signal to search engines that a page includes great content. This leads to better engagement which is a clear signal, and also more likely to get links back to it.

Purpose-driven Content: Content is why people visit your website. The purpose of your site determines the type of content you have to create. People are searching online to answer questions and looking for solutions to problems, some trends, some are bored and looking for entertainment. When making content for SEO you need to think about the questions of your intended users.

Relevant Content: Content needs to tie back to keywords, keywords need to be user focused. Even if a term has traffic it doesn’t mean it’s relevant. All keywords should point back to your site’s overall purpose, this will help contextualize your SEO strategy and ensure traffic you get represents people who want to be there.

Relevant Terms: Keywords that show Google that you have comprehensive coverage of a topic, for iPhone you would have words like technology, apps and iOS. These words show Google that you have breadth of information related to the main theme

Proof Terms: Keywords that must be used when discussing a topic. For iPhone they would be phone, apple, mobile. These terms prove to Google that you are actually covering the topic.

Using both relevant and proof terms are essential to getting rankings for any keyword. Do keyword research but also just write naturally. Look at google autocomplete, keyword tools like google planner to show related terms, Google searches related to feature and look at competitor pages to backup your research.

Also, it's always good to update content. The importance of fresh content varies between queries, but you can bet that it's never a bad thing to give an update with a new sentence, paragraph, image or section, especially if the topic of your page can benefit from the update.
